BBC employees to wear ‘proximity’ tags to prevent them breaching coronavirus social distance rules

BBC staff have been told to wear “social distance proximity devises” to ensure they remain apart from colleagues.

Workers in “key BBC locations” were informed they must wear the technology, which beeps if they come within two metres of other people, to prevent the spread of the virus during lockdown.

In an internal email seen by i, the corporation’s managing director Bob Shennan said the new Covid measures would apply to some “broadcast critical” employees.

Social distancing rules

“Social distancing proximity devices will be rolled out in key BBC locations to help maintain safe social distancing,” he said.

“Anyone coming into those offices will be asked to wear the devices, which will alert wearers when they’re less than two metres apart from someone else.”

The devices, which are square in shape and about two thirds of the size of a pen, must be attached to workers while in BBC buildings. They function using Bluetooth signals to monitor proximity, though they do not store data on people’s movements.

A number of companies have designed technology to ensure social distancing in the workplace, including geo-tracking phone apps, wristbands and watches.

Network Rail staff already use an app, Mind The Gap, designed by a London-based company, which notifies people through their smart phone’s if the breach social distancing rules.

BBC coronavirus programming

BBC staff will also be required to have lateral flow coronavirus tests under the new rules announced. People who enter its workplaces four days a week will have to have the tests twice a week.

The announcement comes after it unveiled a new set of plans to educate the nation’s children while schools are closed.

The BBC will show curriculum content on TV every weekday, starting on 11 January, including primary-school programming from 9am to 12pm on CBBC and at least two hours a day of programming to support the GCSE curriculum on BBC Two.
