Dogecoin’s developers sent the first transaction without the Internet via radio

According to Dogecoin developer Michi Lumin, the DOGE transaction was sent via radio using a protocol called “Radio Doge”. Proponents of dogecoin claim that Radio Doge “will allow access to dogecoin to people outside the reach of the Internet.”

Dogecoin sent by radio

On April 22, 2022, the first dogecoin transaction (DOGE) was sent by radio using the global satellite network Starlink. Developments mean that DOGE could be used to send payments to remote areas where there is no traditional financial infrastructure.

The report was revealed by Dogecoin developer Michi Lumin:

“Hi. I’m sleepy again, so no talk, but I did it, I sent 4,2069 dogecoin (with @tjstebbing and @KBluezr at the receiver 810 miles away), just using libdogecoin, radio, and eventually transmitted to the main network at the other end via Starlink. “

The software behind the transaction is called the “Libdogecoin Project”. The project is a library of Dogecoin protocols that act as building blocks for future projects on the Dogecoin network.

Dogecoin is not the first cryptocurrency sent by radio. Concepts such as mesh networking, amateur radio, and portable antennas have allowed people to send BTC transactions without Internet access. Once in 2019, Sam Patterson, a former OB1 chief operating officer, explained that radio is more peer-to-peer (P2P) than P2P networks built on the web.

“Peer-to-peer networks built on the Internet have a special charm because of the resilience they have without a central point of failure,” he wrote on Twitter February 15, 2019. “A little misleading: they are actually built on many computers and the connections between them. This is not true of radios. Real peer to peer. “

The transaction, sent by Michi Lumin and friends, was performed using HF / LoRaWAN (low cost radio technology) in combination with the Starlink satellite network.

“The first transaction with dogecoin just took place without the internet using Radio Doge. Lots of wow, ” wrote dogecoin supporter on friday. “Radio Doge will give access to dogecoin to people beyond the reach of the Internet,” he added.

This step undoubtedly highlighted the potential usefulness of dogecoin. Originally, the “meme coin” was mentioned by Elon Musk as a coin with the potential to become a “cryptocurrency for people,” and this experiment certainly provides insight into how this could be accomplished.

The Libdogecoin project also includes plans to create standard documentation for Dogecoin, community proof-of-stake, Layer 2 scaling, and these radio nodes. So the Dog could be a black horse in a crypto race for mass adoption.
