Reddit follows Twitter and tests NFTs as a profile picture

2 min read

A few days after Twitter announced a feature to import NFTs to profile picture with verification, Reddit began testing a similar feature.

While Reddit already has its own ETH-based NFT collection, “CryptoSnoos”, the new feature will allow users to add any NFT they have to their profiles.

In a statement provided to TechCrunch, Reddit explained that this NFT test is in very early stages and has not been made available to public users on the site.

“We are always exploring ways to provide value to users and communities on Reddit. We are currently testing the ability to use NFTs as profile pictures (avatars) and verify ownership,” said Reddit spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt. “It’s a small internal test and no decision has been made on expanding or deploying capacity.”

Reddit tests NFT integration

The new NFT test was first seen by developer Nima Owji:

Speaking to TechCrunch, Owji said he found a banner on the Reddit web app. According the developer, the image appeared at the top of the main Reddit community pages. However, the page was not shown to Reddit users.

For Owji, this represents an expansion beyond CryptoSnoos. This is because the banner displayed several different types of images to represent NFTs, not just CryptoSnoos. Also according to him, the “Start” button was not working at the moment.

Reddit has approximately 430 million monthly users, which means these resources can introduce NFTs to a very broad audience.

Reddit and NFTs

As mentioned earlier, the test isn’t the only Reddit initiative targeting the NFT market. After all, its own line of CryptoSnoos NFTs, based on the company’s alien mascot, was launched back in June 2021.

Reddit also created the dedicated page for NFT-related activities nft.reddit.com. For now, the page focuses on CryptoSnoos.

In total, only four CryptoSnoos have been released and Reddit has no definite plans to release more units as they were also just an early test.
