Sorare Signs Licensing deal with German National Football Team

Sorare announced a licensing deal with the German Football Association to mint non-fungible tokens of players on the current German squad.

The Football collectible platform Sorare now has two National football teams signed to deals with France and now German cards up for auction. With the addition of the two Euro 2020 teams, Sorare has amassed nearly 150 international clubs into their network from a number of leagues including Bundesliga, Serie A, and a number of Asian professional leagues.

This is German football’s first foray into the NFT world. Just last week the German Football Association signed a partnership deal with Fanzone, Porsche’s new NFT trading platform. Unlike Sorare, Fanzone is more of a traditional card trading platform and omits the fantasy football aspect Sorare is famous for.

The announcement comes while Germany is playing in the Euro 2020 tournament and many believe Sorare is gearing up for a Global Fantasy Football game for the European Championship. According to Sorare, they have been in talks with a number of other countries in preparation for the Euro 2020 final on July 11.

Sorare’s fantasy football platform

For those new to digital collectibles, Sorare offers football fans the ability to purchase non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in the form of digital cards that users can resell or trade. What makes Sorare unique in the digital sports cards game is that the cards you own make up your fantasy football team and are used to compete against others.

Players select five cards each week to go head to head against other Sorare users with the results determined by the player’s real-world stats that week. Winners earn cards or cryptocurrency for their success, both of which can be exchanged for physical currency. Despite their digital nature, the cards are minted in limited quantities and some can be incredibly rare. There are four levels of rarity on Sorare: common (cannot be sold at the marketplace), rare (100 copies per player), super rare (10 copies per player), and unique cards which are one-of-one releases.

Therefore, on Sorare’s platform, each player has a maximum supply of cards capped at 111 per season. As of this writing, the most expensive card from the German national team is of Robin Koch, a super rare card numbered two-of-ten. The current bid is $968.57 with 18 hours left on the clock.
