Mexico’s third richest man, Ricardo Salinas Pliego, doubled his support for BTC and unveiled plans to open the country’s first BTC-receiving bank.

On June 27, a Mexican billionaire tweeted his support to the general public, noting that his bank was “working” to be the first in Mexico to adopt the world’s leading digital asset.

BTC as the new gold of Mexico

The comments follow the massive approval of BTC by Salinas, who said that it was “absolutely right” to consider BTC as new gold.

Salinas is the founder and chairman of Grupo Salinas, a Mexican corporate conglomerate comprising TV Azteca, the consumer electronics retailer Grupo Elektra, Mazatlan FC and the major local bank Banco Azteca.

Banco Azteca, which had annual sales of $ 2.54 billion in 2020, operates in Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Honduras and Peru. The company, which started operating in 2002, offers consumer loans for goods, loans for personal and small businesses, credit cards, mortgages and payroll systems.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Salinas’ assets rose $ 2.8 billion to $ 15.8 billion this year.

The news added that Salinas stated that it invested 10% of its liquid portfolio in bitcoins last year. He reported respect for the asset several times, including in an interview with Cointelegraph in early 2021.

Conclusion

Mexico passed the Fintech Act three years ago, which outlines the legal framework for cryptocurrencies. This law declares digital currencies as a means of payment. Newly, the country also wants to follow Salvador and completely legalize BTC. Eduardo Murat Hinojosa, an official of the Federal Government of Mexico, even said that he was taking steps to enforce the adoption and cryptocurrencies in the country.
