Twitter Launches Verification for NFTs Used as Profile Pictures; Elon Musk criticizes

2 min read

Twitter announced on Thursday (20) that some iOS (iPhone) users will be able to import NFTs from their cryptocurrency wallets and post them as their profile pictures on the social network.

The feature allows users to obtain a hexagon-shaped NFT profile picture as proof of authenticity instead of the circles used for standard photos.

For now, the service is only available to those who subscribe to the “Labs” feature through the Twitter Blue subscription service.

It’s worth noting that the company’s Blue service, which costs $2.99 a month, offers a set of other features that Twitter charges as a premium.

Twitter will verify NFTs in the profile

While the feature is limited to iOS users, Android and web users will be able to see when a user changes their profile pictures to an NFT.

As mentioned, in addition to being able to import the NFT from the wallet directly into the profile, there will be a verification system:

“Once authenticated, the NFT will appear as a smooth hexagon on all surfaces where your avatar is visible. When people tap it, they will be able to learn more about the art, its collection, provenance and more,” Twitter said in a statement.

The new feature makes use of the OpenSea NFTs Marketplace API.

According to a Twitter spokesperson, the company is limiting the release to subscribers for now to get feedback. So developers will be able to add updates as needed.

The announcement shows how Twitter is engaged in the crypto universe and in its most diverse possibilities, such as NFTs. Last November, Twitter formed a crypto team focused on integrating Web3 applications.

Elon Musk criticizes Twitter on Twitter

Twitter’s initiative was not well received by billionaire Elon Musk. The Tesla CEO used his Twitter account to criticize the social network for launching the feature for NFTs.

The businessman tweeted this Friday (21) that the initiative was “annoying”. In addition, he criticized the social network for not cleaning the platform of spambots that post fraudulent cryptocurrency links.
