UK: the most digitally savvy country in Europe

UK digitally savvy

The UK is the most digitally savvy country in Europe.

This is revealed by a report by eToro and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr), but it highlights that this leadership may not last much longer, as other countries seem more willing to embrace new technologies and are quickly catching up.

The report combines the results of a survey of over 18,000 Europeans with public datasets to calculate the Digital Transformation Index of nine European countries:

  • Denmark,
  • France,
  • Germany,
  • Italy,
  • The Netherlands,
  • Poland,
  • Romania,
  • Spain,
  • The United Kingdom.

The UK has the highest level of digital adoption, although it only ranks third in the Digital Transformation Index

In particular, it has a large spread of card payments and also has a leading position for the use of digital platforms for educational purposes.

Denmark is at the top of the podium when it comes to both e-commerce adoption and the use of digital platforms for banking and interactions with public authorities.

In terms of online access to health information, the Netherlands ranked first, followed by the UK.

Spain also stands out with a second place in the Digital Transformation Index, thanks to high levels of digital literacy, while Romania and Italy follow suit.

However, the report also shows that the UK population seems to be less willing than others to accept further digitization.

The UK, a digitally savvy but concerned country

The co-founder and CEO of eToro, Yoni Assia, commented on this data:

“While the UK tops the table for digital adoption, our study reveals very real concerns among Brits about the pace of digital transformation which suggests more needs to be done to increase buy-in for technological change”.

On top of that, many digital technologies are already deeply rooted in everyday life in Europe, so much so that most people would also be willing to accept more digitization in many areas, such as energy and services (71%), finance (65%) and entertainment (64%).

Center for Economics and Business Research economist Pablo Shah said:

“Digital transformation will underpin much of Europe’s economic progress in the 2020s. This research reveals that levels of digital penetration and engagement vary significantly across Europe. However, while some countries, such as Romania, are poised to close the digital divide, more lukewarm support for digitalisation in countries like the UK may well cause these countries to fall behind their European peers in the years ahead”.
