The XRP Ledger suffered a network disruption lasting over an hour, during which transactions were not validated. David Schwartz, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Ripple, confirmed that the issue was resolved on Tuesday and that an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the outage.
What Happened to the XRP Ledger?
According to XRPL Explorer data, network activity froze at block height 93,927,174, causing a 64-minute halt in transaction processing. This meant that no transactions could be validated, rendering the network temporarily unusable.
Schwartz explained on the platform X that:
“It appeared as though the consensus process was continuing, but no validations were being published.”
As a result, the network entered a form of deadlock.
Validator operators had to manually intervene to select a logical starting point and restore the network to a coordinated state. According to Schwartz, the network might have recovered on its own, but a manual restart was chosen to minimize downtime. Ripple emphasized that all assets remained secure throughout the outage.
Network Failure and the Centralization Debate
The outage has once again raised concerns about the centralization of the XRP Ledger. Daniel Keller, CTO of XRPL node operator Eminence, pointed out that “all 35 nodes” had to revalidate transactions, suggesting that the validator distribution may be relatively limited.
This raises questions about the network’s decentralization, particularly when compared to Ethereum, which boasts over one million active validators daily.
How Did the XRP Price React?
During the outage, XRP briefly dropped to $2.45 but quickly recovered. At the time of writing, XRP is trading at $2.50.
One reason for the minimal impact on XRP’s price is its strong momentum in recent months. Since Donald Trump’s election victory on November 5, XRP has surged approximately 400%.
A Bad Look for Ripple at a Critical Time
The network failure comes at a delicate time for Ripple. CEO Brad Garlinghouse is actively lobbying for XRP to be recognized as a U.S. reserve asset—a proposal currently under review by David Sacks, Donald Trump’s crypto advisor.
However, a major network outage is hardly good publicity for Ripple at such a pivotal moment.
