Amazon has denied rumors of plans to receive cryptocurrencies
An Amazon spokesman said earlier reports of a plan to adopt BTC and a possible future release of its own token next year were untrue.
A news by City AM, citing a source from Amazon, claimed that the world’s leading online retailer plans to adopt BTC and examine the issue of its own token in 2022. According to the report, the source went even further, stating that:
“It’s not just about going through proposals to set up payment solutions for cryptocurrencies at some point in the future – this is a full, well-discussed and integral part of Amazon’s future mechanism of operation. […] It starts with BTC – this is the key first phase of this crypto project, and the directive is based on the very top – Jeff Bezos himself. “
Many people in the community questioned the authenticity of the report and the credibility of the source. It wasn’t long before the company made an official statement and unfortunately declared the City AM report untrue.
“Regardless of our interest in the sector, speculation about our specific plans for cryptocurrencies is not true. We’re just focusing on exploring how it could work for customers shopping on Amazon. ”
In any case, the news hit the market hard, as BTC lost about $ 2,000 in a matter of minutes. At the time of writing, BTC was trading at $ 37,300 after reaching its intraday high of around $ 40,500.
