the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) is sending Team Germany to the capital of China with a digital counterpart. The association would like to immortalize all German participants in the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing as NFTs on the Polygon blockchain – and release them for sale and purchase.
“Sports fans have always been big collectors. This connection between fan and athlete/club is now being extended into the digital world through NFTs,” explains Jens Behler from the DOSB subsidiary German Sports Marketing (DSM) in a press release exclusive to BTC-ECHO in advance. “We are convinced that we are only at the beginning of this development and are pleased that we will be launching our own Team Germany NFTs for the Olympic Winter Games in Beijing,” Behler continued.
The sports association works with the start-up fan zone together to produce and publish the NFTs. The Berlin start-up, founded in 2020, achieved, among other things, through NFT drops in cooperation with the German Football Association (DFB) and the Basketball Bundesliga notoriety. Meanwhile, Fanzone works closely with Fabian Vogelstellers LUKSO together to realize the NFT business.
Sporting development in the NFT space
It’s becoming increasingly clear how merging the NFT sector with the sports industry makes sense. Especially in terms of fan loyalty, NFTs offer a new and innovative way to offer sports enthusiasts a special kind of merchandise.
“In addition to extraordinary sporting successes and personalities, the Olympic Games also produce unforgettable moments, the appeal of which reaches far beyond the world of sports,” says Dirk Weyel, Managing Director of Fanzone. “We want to capture these emotions and the outstanding performance of the athletes of Team Germany in the form of limited, non-copyable digital trading cards for the fans – whether for sports, trading card or NFT fans,” says Weyel.
Meanwhile, the DOSB’s NFT collection consists of digital artworks from all 148 athletes taking part in the Beijing Winter Olympics. Certain challenges are also planned in which you can win limited NFTs or legendary snapshots.
The NFTs are scheduled to be available on Fanzone starting January 31st. 10 percent of the net income goes directly to the athletes.
However, the nostalgic Panini collection is not a thing of the past. Rather, the tokenized Olympic artworks are intended to complement the classic collection.
