- Many YouTube users wonder what the BHM next to the video platform’s logo means.
- Like many big websites this month, YouTube has just kicked off the celebration of Black History Month.
- This means we’ll get to enjoy special content that will celebrate black excellence and importance.
YouTube is promoting one of the racial justice initiatives it has planned for 2021, starting with the “Black History Month” annual observance. So, a “BHM” appeared right next to the YouTube logo, and people are already wondering what this is on social media platforms like Reddit. Naturally, many users thought it would be a good idea to approach this with humor and innocuously spread misinformation by presenting various possible (and funnily plausible) meanings for the acronym.
The Black History Month is celebrated officially in the United States and Canada, and it is also considered important in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and generally in countries where there’s a history linked with the African diaspora. That said, depending on where you live, you may or may not see the BHM next to the YouTube logo. No matter the appearance of that, though, the special content that’s meant to be out this month on YouTube Originals will be available to everyone globally.
In this context, Barack and Michelle Obama will appear on a special YouTube program that is scheduled to “air” on February 26, 2021, showcasing the excellence of black artists, creators, writers, storytellers, and history makers who have played a key role in shaping America’s history. Of course, YouTube will hold more events of this type during the running month, inviting in various prominent representatives of the black community such as Jason Reynolds, Killer Mike, Desus Nice, Jemele Hill, Shantell Martin, and Tobe Nwigwe.
Black History Month begins today and ends on March 1, 2021, so we expect to see many relevant things happening on internet platforms besides YouTube this month. For example, Apple has already announced its intention to celebrate BHM and will launch new editorial collections, a black unity collection for the Watch, special sessions, store items, and more.
Of course, not every black community member agrees with the BHM observance, and some feel that its meaning and symbolism are not serving them well. We respect all opinions, and even those voices are well-substantiated. Still, following such a turbulent year in the United States, we choose to keep the luminous aspects of the BHM, and we invite you to celebrate it in whatever way you can.
