According to prominent macroeconomist Alex Krüger, Bitcoin is currently in a supercycle. In a recent post on X, Krüger explained that the current market cycle is not comparable to previous patterns of crypto cycles.
Bitcoin’s Transformation: From a Niche to the Mainstream
Krüger emphasized that the crypto industry has undergone a historic transformation. In a matter of weeks, it has gone from an industry with limited legal recognition to a government-supported industry. He compares this transformation to the gold market of the 1970s. When President Nixon abandoned the gold standard in 1971, the price of gold rose from 35 to 850 USD per ounce within a decade.
“Bitcoin is experiencing a similar change,” said Krüger. He predicts a significant local top around March 2025, but warns that this does not necessarily mean the start of a bear market. The continuation of the bull market, he said, will depend on factors such as the speed of price increases, funding rates and general macroeconomic conditions.
MicroStrategy continues to invest heavily in Bitcoin
In addition to Kruger’s analysis, MicroStrategy co-founder Michael Saylor announced that the company had once again purchased a significant amount of BTC. MicroStrategy acquired 21,550 BTC for about 2.1 billion USD at an average price of 98,783 USD per BTC.
This means MicroStrategy now owns a total of 423,650 BTC, purchased for approximately 25.6 billion USD at an average price of 60,324 USD per BTC. According to Saylor, the company has generated a BTC return of 43.2% in the current quarter and an impressive 68.7% year-to-date return.
Market considerations and future prospects
Krüger emphasized that despite the recent price increases, it is too early to expect a market peak. Bull runs like this usually have a longer lifespan. He pointed out that the recent election victories of Donald Trump, who is positioned pro-crypto, took place just 33 days ago. This indicates that the current market cycle is still in an early phase.
The parallels with historical gold prices and continued interest from institutional investors like MicroStrategy add to the thesis that BTC may be in an unprecedented supercycle.
