BBC Studio has issued an exclusive global license to the UK-based mobile game publisher Reality Gaming Group to develop a digital card game on the Ethereum blockchain. The theme of the game is Doctor Who, the famous sci-fi hit.
Doctor Who: Worlds Apart
According to announcement, fans will be able to collect and exchange digital versions of their favorite characters and challenge friends in Doctor Who: Worlds Apart. Cards that players collect will be tokenized into unique or non-fungible tokens and will function as digital collectible items. These items can be used during the game or friends can trade with each other.
As with physical cards, there will be rare cards with various Doctors, their companions, allies and enemies.
Content that has been here for 56 years
Kevin Jorge, senior producer for Games & Interactive at BBC Studios, said Dr. Who is one of the most popular and longest series on television. Developers can duse the content that has been on the scene for 56 years. Jorge added that the additional security of blockchain technology will also give fans the peace of mind that they are safe from fraud and piracy.
“The cards will be ERC721 running on a private fork of ethereum, trading on our own marketplace – but we will eventually be running on interacting with ethereum mainnet so that users can withdraw to 3rd party platforms like OpenSea.”
Said Morten Rongaard, co-founder of Reality Gaming Group and chief technology officer.
Reality Gaming Group debuted in 2019 with its first augmented reality game based on Reality Clash blockchains and has more than two decades of experience with gaming platforms for mobile, PC, augmented and virtual reality. According to this announcement, limited-edition cards will be available in packs of five from October, while the game will be launched on a mobile phone in 2021.
Dr. Who will definitely be a great attraction for people who have not heard of blockchain yet. This is a great step towards mainstream adoption and at the same time a demonstration of how blockchain games can work.
