Although the development of the first cryptocurrency city is still ongoing, Uganda is already giving another land for a second one to the Senegalese-American celebrity, Akon.
Akon has announced that the second Akon City will be located in Uganda this time, backed by the Ugandan government. Uganda’s Minister of State for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Isaac Musumba, said at a press conference that a land of one square mile or larger will be provided for Akon City 2 to be built on.
“A place suitable in Uganda that has not-less-than one square mile will be made available to him and his team so he can harness resources and investments, attract investors, manage the project, and have a city,” said Musumba.
Much like the first Akon City in Senegal, it will be using Akon’s own stellar-based cryptocurrency Akoin. The digital currency is already being put to use in Mwale Medical and Technology City (MMTC) in Kenya as a pilot for Akon City.
“We’re going to use exclusively Akoin by the end of 2021,” said Julius Mwale, the principal investor of MMTC.
Akon was asked if the Ugandans will have the financial means to live in the futuristic Akon City. The R&B singer replied that Ugandans will eventually get there, driven by the new opportunities that the city provides.
Experts will be flown in to train the locals. The locals will be properly trained not just in construction, but also in property management and maintenance. The Akon City 2 project is expected to finish by 2036.
