PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) FC, a football club in Europe, has taken the first steps to build an online presence in the metaverse. The club has filed several applications to register its name in order to offer a range of services, including software, memorabilia and non-fungible tokens (NFT) for verification purposes.
Paris Saint-Germain is preparing to enter the Metaverse
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), a French football club, is interested in being present in the meta-verse and is now ensuring that its name is used in these ecosystems. The club has filed a number of trademark applications that seek to base the brand on several collectibles and cards, all verified by Nonfungible Tokens (NFT).
The trademark application filed on March 16 includes downloadable audio and video recordings, downloadable multimedia files containing text, audio and video related to sporting events and goods for use offline and / or in online virtual worlds, all verified by NFT. In addition, PSG has included cryptocurrency wallet software in this application.
Michael Kondoudis, a patent attorney who reports shared on social networks, said:
This filling represents another logical step to protect the brand during its transition to the Metaverse. It is clear that PSG sees the potential of Metaverse and is preparing its brand for the virtual economy that will dominate it.
Sports teams are heading for new horizons
PSG is not the first European football club to recognize the importance of metaverse as an alternative to expanding its reach and gaining new business opportunities. Another football club, FC Barcelona, is also preparing to switch to metaverse and NFT products. This is a trend that many sports organizations are following due to the business opportunities present within these elements.
Kondoudis, who is following these trademark movements, also thinks this trend will increase in the short term:
We expect the number of professional sports sector trademark applications for NFTs and virtual products and services to increase over the next twelve months as brands begin to appreciate the need for meta-version protection.
PSG launched its own fan token in 2020 and used to payment part of the football megastar contract Lionel Messi, which the club signed with him in August.
