There are many changes that occur religiously every year. The seasons change, as the holidays that accompany those seasons change with it. Then there are the gifts that accompany these holidays, which change dramatically each year depending on trends, growths and ages of the receivers. However, there is one thing that ceases to change, and that is the artwork that is presented with or without its gifted partner. This is the card; the infamous card. This is the one thing that can be relied on during a birthday or Christmas season, and is one of the most meaningful parts.

Therefore, it is not something to take lightly, especially if you’re going to take the time to make a handmade card.

If you are the type that wants to make cards but doesn’t know where to start, there are 5 steps for getting prepared to make your own cards.

Step 1: Build your “Creativity Corner” – Find a spot in your house that can be used for creativity, just like an office. Whether that is a corner in your basement or at the kitchen table, find the spot where it is easiest to create with enough space and movement.

Step 2: Get the proper tools – You will need resources for creating cards such as paper, pencils, pencil crayons, pastels. Be creative and if you can get as many tools as possible especially for colouring.

Step 3: Research- Yes, research the person you are making this card for. Find out all you can about favourite colours, things, seasons, people, flowers and that way you have an idea on what you can create.

Step 4: Open your schedule- Creating a card for someone is something that can take as long as you want it to. Some cards range from 30 minutes to 6 hours. Find some time where you are not rushed and have an open mind for design. For me it is late at night before bed.

Step 5: Start- The hardest part. Start with ideas and go from there. Create a layout for your card so you have structure and then let the creativity blossom from there. Make sure there is lots of colour so it will stand out!

After these 5 steps you are well on your way to having a personalized greeting card! They are always something to be proud of and something you can be proud to give no matter how badly drawn the flowers look.

If it is the first time, be easy on yourself and just see how it goes, it won’t be perfect the first time.
