Business Cards – Full Color Or Black and White – What Should You Choose?

You may think that the main purpose of a business card is to provide your contact information in an easy to carry format for your client. But it actually serves a more important purpose – to convey to your client who you are and what you do. Hence you need to be creative in designing your cards as that is the most often recalled aspect of your business by the client. In this article, we will discuss a very important question pertaining to the design of your cards. What should be the color scheme of your business cards – full color or black and white?

The answer primarily depends on what the nature of your business is. Are you a firm providing graphic artwork? Then a plain and simple color scheme will not portray the right message to your client. In this case you should select vibrant full color cards and preferably with some artwork. You can get a professional graphic designer to do it for you, but it’s going to cost you a whole lot more money. My suggestion would be to take a look online. You have plenty of ready made templates available for free download. If you look carefully enough, you can find some really good professionally designed templates for cards. These templates come in all kinds of varieties and if you know a bit of graphic design yourself then you can get them customized to add your unique stamp to it.

Another aspect to keep in mind while going for business cards full color mode is the frequency with which your client is likely to use it. If he is going to look at your business card every time he contacts you, then you can go in for full color cards. No matter how your cards are going to be used, even if your cards are going to be just used for an initial introduction and a handshake, then I suggest you still use cards in full color most of the time, because you never know whose hands your card is going to end up in and you always want to make a great impression with your cards. Even if printing charges are higher for full color business cards than black and white.

Also, you need to be very careful when you choose your color scheme for business cards – full color cards can easily end up being too loud. Another common problem is that the fonts used may not be easily visible in the color background of the cards. I remember once my team was handing over nicely designed business cards – full color background and logo beautifully set in a contrasting color to our prospect in a meeting. He took a look at the business card and said “Can you give me a black and white card? I am color blind.” So take care to choose color schemes that are friendly on the eye and always have at least a set of black and white cards ready for emergencies like this.

Having said all this, most cards today are still black and white, so if you can really carry it off there is nothing like designing business cards full color!
