Reddit, Amazon and Twitch down: Major internet sites temporarily reported 503 errors after Fastly problems

2 min read

Many of the world’s most-visited websites temporarily went offline as a result of issues originating at cloud service company Fastly.

Reddit, Amazon, Twitter, Paypal, eBay and many news sites, including the Guardian, Financial Times and CNN, were inaccessible for around an hour on Tuesday morning.

Visitors to the UK government and HMRC pages were also met with error messages, preventing them from accessing services and accounts.

A widespread outage at a data centre belonging to Fastly, a US-based edge cloud platform designed to help digital content load more quickly, was believed to be behind the issues.

Fastly said it had been “investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN [content delivery network] services” shortly before 11am BST and that it would continue to examine the issue.

It updated its status page to confirm that the issue had been identified and fixed shortly before 12pm and that its global network was coming back online.

Content delivery networks reply on servers scattered across the world working in unison to deliver internet content more quickly, including images, videos, HTML pages files and spreadsheets, and serve the vast majority of web traffic for the likes of Amazon, Netflix and Facebook.

When working correctly, they can improve a website’s loading time and its security while reducing the cost of bandwidth, meanding organisations are able to pay less to host websites.

Many parts of Fastly’s services displayed ‘degraded performance‘ across Europe, North and South America, Asia, South Africa and India during the outage.

Fastly has been contacted for comment.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
