Meme used by Elon Musk “BTC for $ 69,000” sold as an NFT for $ 20,000
2 min readElon Musk’s love for communication using memes, especially when passing on messages about cryptocurrencies, is nothing new. While most of his posts used to launch massive price pumps, a Thursday tweet showing two lovers looking at BTC’s price of $ 69,000 and Ethereum’s $ 4,200 just made the 28-year-old creator of the meme thousands of dollars richer.

Although it looked like one of Elon Musk’s cryptocurrency tweets, most people didn’t know that the photo released by Tesla’s CEO was in fact the work of the NFT listed on Zora, the NFT marketplace that allows collectors and creators to buy, sell and manage NFT on Ethereum.

The creator, 28-year-old Eva Beylin, couldn’t believe it when Dogefather posted her work on his official Twitter page, which provoked more than half a million positive reactions from Elon’s followers, including the Huobi Exchange and Okex CEO Jay Hao.
In an almost immediate response, the work entitled “Love in The Time of Web3” received overwhelming attention from buyers bidding for NFT, more than 8 times the price of $ 1,683.16.
A few hours later, Eva sold the piece to an anonymous buyer for $ 20,004.71, which the NFT offered for sale for WETH 69.42 ($ 277,745.39) two hours later. At the time of writing, the artwork has already received an offer from another buyer, 6,942 WETH ($ 27,774.54), more than Eva’s sale price. If it is resold, Beylin said it will also receive 15% royalties.
However, Beylin herself was not the original creator of the meme template, according to Eva, her motivation to create an NFT came from another Twitter user known as Shegen, who adjusted the prices in a similar frame in the picture and tweeted it as a joke. Although she agreed that her actions raised legal issues regarding copyright infringement, which is still a gray area in the NFT industry, she told CNBC that she would send Shegen 20% of the proceeds as a token of gratitude for being able to use it to inspire and edit when creating an NFT.
Eva, who is motivated by the sale, now plans to expand her NFT activities by reinvesting the proceeds from the sale by purchasing projects from other creators and creating their own NFTs for sale.
