Epic Games is suing Apple Inc. for allegedly monopolizing the payment market in applications and disabling innovation such as Bitcoin payments.
Epic Games is suing for monopolization of payments
The developer of the very popular game Fortnite in a lawsuit filed on Thursday claimed that Apple was acting anti-competitive by imposing a “repressive” 30% sales tax on the sale of applications, while banning third-party payment processors from its platform.
Impossibility of payments even through cryptocurrencies
Epic claims that Apple’s allegedly monopolistic behavior has damaged payment innovations. Competitive in-app payment processes could accept “Bitcoins or other cryptocurrencies” and not completely eliminate them, Epic Games said. Epic Games is demanding that the U.S. District Court for Northern California prohibit Apple from acting in a monopoly manner and ending what Apple calls throttling in-app payments.
The lawsuit appears to be a legal Epic Games campaign launched against Apple after technology giant fired Fortnite from the Apple store on Thursday. Apple said that the implementation of its own payment system in the application was a reason to eliminate the game.
Apple has not only faced this lawsuit recently, but has confessed before Congress about the legitimate monopolization of the market, along with other giants such as Google, Facebook and Amazon.
