Internet of Things: Opportunity for IOTA?

2 min read

What is the Internet of Things?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical devices, vehicles, buildings, and other objects equipped with sensors and software to collect and analyze data.

These devices are connected to each other and to the Internet to exchange data and respond to requests. The Internet of Things makes it possible to make devices autonomous, thereby increasing the efficiency and convenience of everyday life. A frequently used example here is the smart fridge: it notices when your yoghurt is empty and sends the corresponding message to your smartphone.

smart home

Smart homes are houses equipped with connected devices to simplify and improve the lives of residents. For example, smart thermostats can automatically adjust the room temperature when someone leaves or returns to save energy. Smart door locks can also be controlled remotely to see who is entering and exiting the home. Or the fridge that tells you to buy yoghurt.

healthcare

Healthcare also has IoT applications, from wearable devices to hospital monitoring equipment. For example, wearable devices such as smartwatches can monitor a person’s health status and send data to a doctor or hospital. Smart medical devices can also monitor and send real-time patient data to medical staff.

transportation

The Internet of Things also has applications in transportation, such as intelligent traffic control or autonomous vehicles. Autonomous vehicles are equipped with sensors, cameras and artificial intelligence to drive safely and efficiently.

Room for IOTA?

IOTA is a cryptocurrency that was developed with a focus on finding its place in this fabric of things. One of the main uses of the project is the ability to perform microtransactions between devices. So the place for IOTA in the Internet of Things is to exchange data and make payments between devices, like if your fridge should eventually decide to make the payment for the yogurt itself. Whether the refrigerator – and all other smart devices with it – actually choose IOTA is another matter.

In fact, however, the project already has partnerships with companies such as DELL, Jaguar, Linux Foundation and many more, which gives hope for a positive future.
