Is ChatGPT a Real Revolution?

4 min read

2022 has been a breakthrough year for AI art. Many algorithms have appeared and they allow everyone to create unique paintings from a passage of text. Various companies and individual developers vied with each other to create systems and web applications based on neural networks. DALL-E 2, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion are still in demand and will be popular for a long time to come.

However, in 2023, the community was interested in another technology – the new “revolutionary” ChatGPT neural network.

In November 2022, OpenAI released the ChatGPT chatbot, which you can ask a question or enter a query and get an “almost human” response. The technology has a number of limitations, including a limited knowledge base, the inability to express feelings, and the generation of erroneous facts. Two months after the launch, the number of ChatGPT users reached 100 million. Some experts expressed doubts about the “revolutionary” service, others compared its release with the release of the first iPhone. Like any powerful system that automates work processes, it will affect those who offer similar skills in the job market.

What is the ChatGPT Neural Network?

ChatGPT is the fastest growing chatbot service in history. It was released by the AI lab OpenAI in November 2022.

The system is based on the updated GPT-3 language model – the GPT-3.5 neural network – and trained on the Azure AI supercomputer.

The user can ask a question, enter a query or hint (a prompt) and receive a detailed “almost human” text response. The algorithm is able to talk on various topics and understand the context, admit mistakes, joke and argue.

The chatbot supports many languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, German, Russian, Ukrainian, French, and Japanese. On them, the algorithm can answer questions, generate text on a given topic, and perform other tasks.

Limitations of ChatGPT Chatbot

One of the main limitations of the bot is that it has access to data relevant for 2021. Therefore, it will not work to find out the weather forecast for tomorrow in Kyiv, details about the HBO series “The Last of Us” released in 2023, or whether Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain is alive.

The system sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers. You can’t take her word for it and you need to check the information.

Also, the bot does not give predictions or estimates, and is not able to express feelings, since it is “just a language AI model.”

Where is the “revolutionary” technology used?

People use a chatbot in many ways, both for entertainment and work purposes.

ChatGPT is capable of writing poetry and songs, commenting on tweets, generating unique content for blogs or social networks, doing homework in various subjects, creating program code, and many other things.

Wharton School of Business professor Christian Terwisz tested ChatGPT in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) exam. According to him, on the final test, the AI would have received a “B” or “B-” grade.

In the US, students have also been caught using a chatbot. For example, Furman University lecturer Darren Hick claimed that his student forged an essay using ChatGPT.

Such situations have happened more than once. For this reason, some educational institutions in different countries, including the United States, Australia and France, have banned the use of AI from OpenAI on institution devices and internal Wi-Fi networks. Is ChatGPT really “revolutionary”?

Meta Vice President and Lead AI Specialist Jan LeKun said that in terms of underlying methods, the ChatGPT neural network is not “particularly innovative” and “there is nothing revolutionary about it.”

Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum, stated that the chatbot made several mistakes in the task of coding.

However, he added that in many cases ChatGPT can do well and write pretty good code, especially for common tasks.

ChatGPT is modernizing the school curriculum and policies, influencing work processes and has already become a household name. This chatbot isn’t the first AI tool, but it has become one of the main drivers of the technology’s adoption into the mainstream.

Large companies are especially closely watching such projects. For example, in January, Microsoft announced a “multi-year, multi-billion dollar” investment in OpenAI.

In February, Google introduced its own chatbot. While it is available to a limited number of testers.

The Future of the ChatGPT Neural Network

Anyone with Internet access can use systems like DALL-E 2 and ChatGPT to express themselves and explore vast amounts of information.

Language AI allows even beginners to generate marketing offers in minutes, find ideas to overcome writer’s block and generate code that can perform certain functions. And all this is almost at the level of human specialists.

However, the technology needs human intervention – the creation of text prompts to obtain the desired results, observation and control.

Despite the advantages of AI, there are also disadvantages. First, such tools can accelerate the loss of important human skills like writing.

Educational institutions will need to develop and implement policies for the acceptable use of large language models in order to achieve the desired learning outcomes.

AI systems raise questions about intellectual property.

There are inaccuracies in the work of artificial intelligence. It may produce false facts, broken code, or a nonsensical set of sentences.

ChatGPT may be a breakthrough technology, but it has limitations.

However, the AI algorithm is already impacting society, and the phenomenon will just be growing in the future.
